The Red and White Gurgler is a classic, fast action, late summer Top Water Fly. Imitating an injured fish with the choice of red and white colors, the floation from the foam and the gurgling action from the front fold create an excellent attractant for the Smallmouth Bass. Try tying the Gurgler today, using our instructions and corresponding photos below.
Ingredients:
Red marabou
3mm white foam
Crystal flash or mylar motion, gold or silver
Size 4 bass hook, Dai-Riki #810 or equal
Thread any color durable thread, I'm using 210 denier green
Step # 1 Wrap & glue thread base
Step # 2 Tie in red marabou tail
Step # 3 Tie in flash material, 2 pieces on each side
Step # 4 Cut foam 1 3/8" x 3/8"
Step # 5 Fold foam by 1/3 and hold.
Step # 6 Pierce foam with scissor at the fold you just created
Step # 7 Slide foam over hook eye and all the way down the hook shaft and over the tie in point of the marabou
Step # 8 Pinch bottom foam to help thread squeeze foam (8A), and wrap 3 wraps (8B). Advance thread over the hook approx.1/3 of the belly foam wrap again 3 wraps (8C), and again remaining 1/3 and again 3 wraps (8D).
Step # 9 Advance thread in front of foam.
Step # 10 Fold top foam towards hook eye and hold in place, wrap 3 times. ( as always don't crowd the hook eye).
Step #11 Advance thread in front of foam and build up thread hump ( this is important to help keep the foam head up which creates the gurgling action.) tie off and glue.
